Alicante in Spain is a delightful province for a summer holiday. A plethora of interesting sights and spots from the old and new eras would thrill all visitors.
Ancient attractions
There are many beautiful ancient monuments in Alicante stemming from a vibrant culture and a rich history. Monuments as old as 14th century are well preserved with the majestic Basilica de Santa Maria topping the list. This ancient church is Alicante’s most ancient Gothic style church. This interesting building stands on the same spot of the previous Moorish mosque during the Moorish rule. When the Christian Re-Conquest took over Alicante, the king had several Moorish structures torn down to be replaced by churches and cathedrals in Renaissance style.
Hence, tourists would find Christian ancient monuments standing over the sites of ancient Moorish structures. This includes the 15th century San Nicolas cathedral which was built in Renaissance style. Close by, there is the impressive 15th century Santa Faz monastery that can be easily accessible within 5km from the city. This ancient stone building is impressive with its most ornate decorations which are the structure’s highlight and signature.
The Casa de La Asegurada is a 15th century civil building which is considered the oldest in town having been transformed into a museum to showcase contemporary art pieces. There is no lack of interesting ancient artifacts on display here which are also seen at the Archaeological museum. A host of unique Stone Age exhibits can be seen at the museum such as the highly esteemed ancient statue of Dama de Cabezo.
The city’s modern town hall is the ancient Casa Consistorial of 18th century with a special point. Its position is an exact zero-meter above the sea level to have it rightly identified as the nation’s reference point on altitude.
Another ancient building from the 18th century is the Palacio Gravina which houses many works of arts from the Museum of Gravina. Here, numerous regional paintings and interesting ancient sculptures dating back to the 16th century are on display.
Lifestyle
The lifestyle at Alicante has proven to be simple yet vibrant. There is no lack of activity at Alicante with the daily local market, Mercado Central. This modern 20th century market is well constructed in contemporary style to befit the new era. However, this building is unique with the ancient town walls as part of its structure as it caters to the daily marketing needs of the locals.
The locals at Alicante would also be delighted to check out Lonja de Pescado; this 20th century fish market is a hive of activity with its double function as an exhibition center.
